Now that you’ve been through a few volumes of my textbook on learning to speak English, let’s do a review exercise. Please translate the following:

Butts are rubbish. Bin them.

    Pfft. Too easy. Cigarette butts are trash, put them in the trash can.

    I did have trouble with remembering to say the British versions of things in London, though. Like “I’d like this for take-away” instead of “to-go”. Four of us GSLIS students were out at a pub one night and the one who just moved from Italy to start the PhD program was laughing at the trouble we had understanding the waitress and getting her to understand us. He said it was so nice to see someone else having that trouble instead of him.

    It took me a couple of times to figure out that most of the fast food-ish restaurants are different too. Whereas at home you can order at the counter and either take your food away or sit down at one of the tables, in London most of the places charged a different price for staying in the restaurant and sitting at a table!
