wild wicklow
Last weekend I took a bus day trip with a bunch of tourists to various sites in County Wicklow, including the location of St. Kevin’s mission. I was hoping for lots of tacky Kevin paraphernalia, but I’m afraid I didn’t find any. However, you can find my photos online. As with many of my photos in Ireland, I’ve had to adjust the photos after the fact to take into account the low natural light. So if you’re wondering why some photos appear brighter than others, know that it’s likely because I tweaked some of them, not because the sun went in and out so fast.

Fun times! On my only visit to Ireland, I spent 9 days in Glendalough. It looks like you barely scratched the surface of Kevin-related sites there. You don’t seem to have visited his lake, cave, or hermit’s cell. It’s a gorgeous spot, isn’t it?

There are two lakes there, but I’m not sure which was “his”. But I didn’t know he had a cave or hermit’s cell! Our driver would have showed us around the site, but due to a washed out bridge from recent flooding, he wasn’t able to park the bus in the usual spot and therefore left us to explore on our own while he parked illegally. Perhaps I’ll need to take the “St. Kevins Bus Service” another weekend to spend more time there!

I remember there being an upper lake and a lower lake. At one of them St Kevin famously battled a dragon, iirc. We had a local guide for our trip–Marcus, who seemed to know just about every person we met, as well as having literally written the book on celtic spirituality in Glendalough. I will show you my pics from the trip when you return and then you, too, can see the hermit cell, etc.
