a hurried posting
I forgot to mention that on April 30 I saw Zdob Si Zdub, a group from Moldova blending klezmer and hard rock, at Ниагара [Niagara]. Since there were only maybe 50 people there, you could get real close to the band. Was interesting.
Two notes regarding previous posts:
- Apparently a хмырь is unattractive, not just a creep.
- If you want to share the URL for my "Searching the English-Language Internet" talk, use this instead: http://www-personal.umich.edu/~kshawkin/talks/20050513.html . It's not part of my ugly English class blog.
I'm running out of time before leaving for the trip, but I need to quick unload all my pictures so I have plenty of room on my camera. So here's what I've collected in the last two days:
View from Kolomenskoye onto the Moskva river. The clouds were quite threatening, but the Russian government has been busy seeding them so that it won't rain on Victory Day. With the current forecast, I'm not sure it's going to help much.
They've been practicing for Victory Day celebrations for days now. Tverskaya was closed Saturday, so you could for once actually step out into the street and get a good view of it.
Same street, but now you can see the edge of the Kremlin at the end of the street.
Other streets are earily empty. The State Duma is the building in the center of the second photo.
I think maybe I actually found a larger advertisement than the first one. The Minsk Hotel is being renovated apparently, so they've covered the whole facade (exccept the name of the hotel) with an ad for Home Magazine. Their slogan: "a high quality of life".

What a coincidence that you're leaving on the day that Bush is visiting Moscow. It doesn't matter where you go, you can't hide! Eeeiiiiiiieeeee.
