papers and presentations, weather, holidays, Bush vs. Jesus

Had a busy week, relatively speaking. I finished up my conference paper for St Petersburg and gave my first English class yesterday and gave a talk to a group of librarians today. Both presentations went well. I'll provide links to materials later for those who are interested.

I believe Friday was the third day in a row that we had sunshine. Thursday, the second day in a row, was already a record since I arrived, at least as far as I remember. Just in time for International Women's Day on Tuesday—it seems that the holiday doubles as a sort of early spring holiday as well. But we're back to mostly cloudy today.

Since Tuesday is a holiday, Monday is a day off from work too. But to make up for Monday, everyone works Saturday. Then they get three days off in a row. I'm not sure if I think this is a better or worse idea than the American system of holding a holiday on the third Monday of the month, for example.

Do take a look at the Bush Campaign's TV Commercial if He Was Running Against Jesus from a recent issue of Mad Magazine. To head off language questions, it would make sense to say "if he were running against Jesus," but the subjunctive is really only used in formal written American English.
